what is silicone made of

Silicone's composition.

Silicon is a synthetic polymer. Silicone is a silicon-based synthetic polymer.

Silicon and silicone sound similar but are really different. Silicon, the raw chemical element, is used to make silicone, a rubber substance.

Pure silicon is brittle and rigid. It's crystalline and metallically grey/blue. It's the ninth most abundant element. It seldom solidifies in the crust. Silica, a silicon oxide and the major component of sand, is removed from and passes through hydrocarbons. what is silicone made of?

Silicone is made from silicon, hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. It is a synthetic substance with incredible viscoelasticity. Rubbers are viscoelastic.

Silicone polymer, a synthetic elastomer, is elastic and man-made. Silicone compounds also include siloxanes. Silicone-oxygen atoms alternate in siloxane.

Silicone Rubber Production:

Silicon and silica must be separated to produce silicone. Quartz sand is heated to 1800oC to complete this procedure.

Silicon is heated with methyl chloride in numerous subsequent procedures. Distilled polydimethylsiloxane may be further polymerized.

Viking Extrusions mills all silicone grades in-house. We add colours and additives to raw silicone compound, combine with a catalyst, then extrude and cure via High-Temperature Vulcanisation (HTV). Our in-house facilities allow us to track every batch. This ensures the greatest quality control from raw compound to completed product. We make plenty of food-grade and medical-grade silicone.

Silicone's Uses?

Mass-producing silicone rubber-based compounds is cheap. Silicone is used for:

Sealants - Silicone is a great sealing material since it is flexible and stable at high and low temperatures. It resists chemicals, dampness, and water.

Adhesives - Silicone's unique qualities make it a great and durable glue. Its qualities, including elasticity, are unaffected by temperature.

Silicone fluids have lubricated plastics and rubbers for decades. Because of their low friction coefficients.

Extrusions - Silicones are stable, durable, and resistant to temperature. Because to its heat-resistance, silicone is ideal for gaskets, caulks, and seals.

Cookware, automobile components, electrical insulation, medicinal applications, fillers, coatings, breast implants, personal care goods, and more may be made from it.

Silicone Rubber Benefits?

Silicone's various benefits make it valuable in many industries:

Silicone is stable from -70°C to +200°C.

Chemical inertness

UV/Ozone-resistant

Repels water—useful for watertight seals, gaskets, and non-stick items.

Low-toxic

Silicone may be conductive and insulating.

Non-microbiological.
