Silicon and silicone sound similar but are really different. Silicon, the raw chemical element, is used to make silicone, a rubber substance.

 

Pure silicon is brittle and rigid. It's crystalline and metallically grey/blue. It's the ninth most abundant element. It seldom solidifies in the crust. Silica, a silicon oxide and the major component of sand, is removed from and passes through hydrocarbons. what is silicone made of?

 

Silicone is made from silicon, hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. It is a synthetic substance with incredible viscoelasticity. Rubbers are viscoelastic.

 

Silicone polymer, a synthetic elastomer, is elastic and man-made. Silicone compounds also include siloxanes. Silicone-oxygen atoms alternate in siloxane.

 

Silicone Rubber Production:

Silicon and silica must be separated to produce silicone. Quartz sand is heated to 1800oC to complete this procedure.

 

Silicon is heated with methyl chloride in numerous subsequent procedures. Distilled polydimethylsiloxane may be further polymerized.
